Socrates, in 5th century BCE, identified the wisdom, that we are forgetting in today’s time. The wisdom is – An unexamined life is not worth living. Life is not worth living if a person don’t have craving to seek wisdom and knowledge on how to live a good life. Both wisdom and knowledge help people know and understand life and find value in it. The wisdom and knowledge help people to avoid mistakes and wrong decisions in their life.
Socrates meaning for unexamined life is not that you take nonsense risks in your life on that name to examine the life like bike racing, car racing, drinking too much etc. It’s meaning, examine the knowledge and wisdom you have and with each experiment keep correcting it.
According to Socrat, living a life where you live under the rules of others, in a continuous routine without examining what you actually want out of it is not worth living. As per me, it’s half right in today’s time. If you love doing your work then it’s fine to do the job that you are doing in a defined time frame as well. If you don’t love your job then you can go and find the job that you love. The theory that all lives that are unexamined don’t have a purpose and should not be lived is unreasonable and simply not true. There is a lot more that contributes to a person’s happiness and well-being besides examining their lives. Factors such as life experiences, being with family, things to be thankful for, memories, and reaching success in life. Everything that makes one happy, and a happy life should most definitely be lived whether its examined or not.
Yes, we must explore the things of our interest. All the things in the world can not be experienced and explored, so we must focus only on the area of our interest and which is good for our health and wealth. People misunderstood it and on the name of examining and exploring their experiences, they start using the wrong things which is not good for their health and wealth. The things like cigarette, alcohol etc is not good.
Explore your wisdom, knowledge and the world by vising to new places, meeting with new people and learn from everyone and from everything. I think that is only the meaning of examining the life.
“If truth is what you seek, then the examined life will only take you on a long ride to the limits of solitude and leave you by the side of the road with your truth and nothing else.”
