The Art of adding to your life via negativa

Reading Time: 3 minutes

This article is inspired for the book Antifragile by Nassim Taleb. He suggests that the solution to many problems in life is by removing things, not adding things. Like, avoiding television if not required, avoiding mobiles use if not required, or avoiding to eat more and outside food if need good health, avoiding to expend on the things which are not important and not required etc.

Normally, we waste a lot of time and energy on the things, which are really don’t matter. Why we always try to add things in our life but in reality we don’t need them. We always compare ourselves with others and try to get the things which other’s own. Why we do over expense on the things like fancy TV, mobiles, useless subscriptions, alcohol, cigarettes, outside unhealthy food etc. We are just keep adding and with it we are adding debt, health problems, family problems and many other problems as well in our life. But, in actual what we must do it, whatever is necessary for us to live a good life, just do expense on it, whatever our body needs, just eat it. Why we do forceful things against our nature, pocket and body. Taleb writes –

I would add that, in my own experience, a considerable jump in my personal health has been achieved by removing offensive irritants: the morning newspapers, the boss, the daily commute, air-conditioning, television, emails from documentary filmmakers, economic forecasts, news about the stock market, gym “strength training” machines, and many more.

By just removing TV, useless use of mobile, newspaper, unnecessary commutes, useless internet surfing etc, we can save a lot of time, energy and money. And we direct our-self towards a meaningful life. Taleb then adds –

If true wealth consists in worriless sleeping, clear conscience, reciprocal gratitude, absence of envy, good appetite, muscle strength, physical energy, frequent laughs, no meals alone, no gym class, some physical labor (or hobby), good bowel movements, no meeting rooms, and periodic surprises, then it is largely subtractive.

Just try to simplify your life. Don’t confuse yourself. And don’t stuck in this trap. Just stop doing unnecessary expenses, through your credit cards. Stop buying things on EMI and credit cards, Stop wasting time on TV and mobiles, instead read good books, Stop roaming aimlessly, Stop meeting useless people etc. Stop saying yes to everything and learn to say NO. It’s very important to say NO.

Remove what you don’t want from your life-

Stop following others. Rather than following others blindly, be honest with yourself about your values and priorities. Let other’s do what they want to do with their life. People provoke you but it’s you who have to decide whether to be provoked or do what you want to do. Decide your goals and just keep working on them. Choose your goals wisely. You have your own limitation and you can not achieve everything out their, so keep realistic goals.

Remove people from your circle, who are not good and whom you don’t care. It’s better to have less friends then having a crowd, which don’t support you when you will be in need. Always choose your friends wisely because you are a combination of the five people around you always. You slowly get their attitude and their habits in your life. Stay away from the useless people and people with bad habits. Secure yourself from the other’s, who try to rule you. You have your own attitude and direction for life.

start removing all the things from your life, which are not important and for which or whom you don’t care at all. This simple wisdom will help you to free yourself from many problems of the world and people.

You have limitations, you have your own limited time, energy, wisdom. Why to waste this limited asset on the things which are useless, with the people who are useless and mindless. Who don’t know the value of time and family and care. People, who just know how to waste the time and assets they currently have. I think, you have more money, save it, donate it, help to others via any medium that you have. You have time, use it for yourself, for your loved one, for reading and writing, for helping others. Stop Wasting the time and energy.

Lesson from a monk: The Empty Boat

Spread the love

Reading Time: 2 minutesThis is an interesting story and lessons for us all. I read the titled article on Quora and i got a lesson, so thought to share the lesson on my blog. Hope you also learn the lesson from the article. The actual link of the quora, i will share in the bottom of this article.  All the credit of this article goes to the real writer on Quora.

The story is:

A monk decides to meditate alone, away from his monastery. He takes his boat out to the middle of the lake, moors it there, closes his eyes and begins his meditation.

After a few hours of undisturbed silence, he suddenly feels the bump of another boat colliding with his own.

With his eyes still closed, he senses his anger rising, and by the time he opens his eyes, he is ready to scream at the boatman who dared to disturb his meditation.

But when he opens his eyes, he sees it’s an empty boat that had probably got floated to the middle of the lake.

At that moment, the monk achieves self-realization, and understands that the anger is within him; it merely needs the bump of an external object to provoke it out of him.

From then on, whenever he comes across someone who irritates him or provokes him to anger, he reminds himself, “The other person is merely an empty boat. The anger is within me.”

What we have learned from the story is – The Anger is withing us and it’s we, who can control it. It’s not only aplicable on anger, it is applicable on all the negative feelings inside us like sadness, jealousy, stress etc.

If you can empty your own boat
Crossing the river of the world,
No one will oppose you,
No one will seek to harm you.

Let’s empty our own boat, while we deal in the world. No one have power to oppose you on your thoughts. It’s only you, who have the power.

Anger, in any form, is caused by frustration of a desire. Let’s have realistic desired and the ones which we really need. Don’t try to accomplish all the things in the world. Peace of mind and peace in life is more important than all the worldly things.

In the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, Lord Shri Krishna says:

One develops attachment for the sense-objects by thinking about the sense-objects. Desire for sense-objects comes from attachment to them, and anger comes from unfulfilled desires.

In the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita, Lord Shri Krishna says:

Those who are free from anger and all material desires, who are self-realized, self-disciplined and constantly endeavouring for perfection, are assured of liberation in the God in the very near future.

The whole purpose of the article is just to enlighten ourself on the emotion “ANGER”. You can read the article on quora from this link.

Focus on your main duty

Spread the love
Reading Time: 3 minutes

This post is inspired from the book The Art Of Living by Epictetus. This is a must read book on the philosophy of life. In this post we will look on the philosophy of main duty, that we have to focus on. What is main duty for us, that we need to decide for our-self. Each person have their own main duties. We must decide the main purpose of our life and work in the direction of it. We get many distractions while performing the right and main duties of our life but we need to get our-self back on the track and keep working in the right direction.

There are time and place for diversion and amusement, but you should never allow them to override your true purposes. People, things and the world will distract you, but you have to remember what you have decided for your life’s main duty and be align to it.

For some people, only eating, drinking and roaming around and amusement is the only purpose of life. When we ask them, they say, life is small and let’s enjoy, why to worry. I don’t understand it. Let’s enjoy, what does it mean. Is it only drinking, eating outside in hotels or roaming around in the city and always try to stay away from family , home and your kids. I don’t know and i don’t want to comment as well, whether it is right or wrong. For my personality it is not right. I am interested in giving time to my work, my family and my kids and my health. I don’t have interest in drinking, eating outside and aimlessly roaming on the city streets. But, everyone have their life and their vision towards life. So, no comment from my end on it. Let’s come back to our actual topic of the post.

I believe the main duty of life can be decided with yourself only. Like, we must stop blaming others for whatever happen to us. It is us, who is responsible for whatever happen to us or in our life. So stop blaming the outside world.

Another duty in life is towards our-self, like we must work on our body, mind and soul. We must find time for our body like exercise, for our mind like reading and writing, for our soul like Prayer and meditation. The Bhagavadgita says-

” One should uplift oneself by oneself; and one should not debase oneself because surely the Self is one’s own friend and one’s own enemy.”

We have duties towards society as well. Serving the humanity is like serving the god itself. Charity is the best way to do it. Let help the people who are in real need in whatever medium we are capable of like giving food, money or clothes, or donation to child care hold or old-age homes.

As a human being and the best creation of the god, we have a duty towards all the living beings on the earth like the animals, tree, earth, insects etc. You believe or not, everything have soul. We must not harm anything intentionally. we must care and nourish them.

We must not harm other religions and other’s believe systems. We must not unnecessary give opinions on other people and their believe systems. Each one have there life and there thought and believe system, we must respect it.

The main duty is , we must focus on our KARMA(ACT) only, and don’t interfere in other’s matter. Just focus on your actions and inaction and leave the outcome. Do your KARMA(ACT) rightly. Take care your outer and internal worlds at the best you can via physical exercise and mental exercise like pray and meditation. Speak truth and be with truth only. Leave the company wrong and wrong people.
